Deposition morphology of granular column collapses

چکیده

Granular column collapses result in an array of flow phenomena and deposition morphologies, the understanding which brings insights into studying granular flows both natural engineering systems. Guided by experiments, we carried out computational studies with discrete element method (DEM) to identify fundamental links between macro-scale behavior micro-scale properties columns. A dimensionless number combining particle bulk column, $$\alpha _{\text {eff}}$$ , was found from dimensional analysis determine three collapse regimes (quasi-static, inertial, liquid-like), revealing universal trends morphologies under different conditions. This may represent physically competing inertial frictional effects that govern collapse, including energy conversion dissipation. The finding is important for quantitatively materials their deposits.

Granular column collapses: further experimental results

Experimental observations of the collapse of initially static columns of sand in axisymmetric and two-dimensional geometries are presented. The experiments were carried out using cylinders and rectangular tanks 30 to 60 cm tall, and cover aspect ratios between 0.5 and 20, where the aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of the initial height to horizontal extent of the column. The final positions...

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...

Collapses of two-dimensional granular columns.

The first detailed quantitative observations of the two-dimensional collapse of a granular column along a horizontal channel are presented for a variety of materials. Together with the complementary study for the axisymmetric situation, we conclude that for granular collapses the generally accepted approaches, that are highly dependent on frictional parameters, do not describe the main flow phe...

Column collapse of granular rods.

We investigate the collapse of granular rodpiles as a function of particle (length/diameter) and pile (height/radius) aspect ratio. We find that, for all particle aspect ratios below 24, there exists a critical height Hl below which the pile never collapses, maintaining its initial shape as a solid, and a second height Hu above which the pile always collapses. Intermediate heights between Hl an...

Geometric Morphology of Granular Materials

We present a new method to transform the spectral pixel information of a micrograph into an affine geometric description, which allows us to analyze the morphology of granular materials. We use spectral and pulse-coupled neural network based segmentation techniques to generate blobs, and a newly developed algorithm to extract dilated contours. A constrained Delaunay tesselation of the contour p...
